Who is Satan? Explain where he came from and how he came to be the enemy of God.

Satan is a created angel, not an eternal rival to God. He began as Lucifer, the greatest angel God ever made, who had the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty, the anointed cherub who guarded the throne room of God. But iniquity was found in him, a willful rebellion expressed in the five "I will" statements of Isaiah 14, in which he determined to be independent from and equal to his Creator. It was pride, now called "the sin of the devil," that defeated him. He could not accept that he and all the angels were made ministering spirits for the sake of a lesser creature, mankind, whom God intended to raise above the angels, and so he was transformed from defender to accuser, and one-third of the angels revolted with him.
