What would lead you to believe that there is a system of rank and authority in the angelic realm?

The Scripture points us to it plainly. There are more than two hundred references to angels, and the biblical evidence is that God placed these beings in ranks and orders not unlike military ranks. They are called not only "angels" (messengers) but also thrones, powers, rulers, and authorities. Michael is singled out as the archangel, and Ezekiel shows us that Lucifer was the greatest of all in power, beauty, and rank, the anointed cherub who covers. Where there is an archangel and a highest cherub, there is order, rank, and authority throughout the angelic realm.
