The plan of God moves through four great dispensations, and a timeline of human history can be drawn as a single line passing through them in turn. First is the age of Israel, governed by the Old Testament promises, and above all the Davidic Covenant, in which an eternal throne, kingdom, and posterity were pledged to David; this age closed when Israel rejected her King. Second is the Church Age, the mystery that God foreshadowed in the break Daniel saw in Israel's history and then revealed in full to Paul; it began when the Holy Spirit descended at Pentecost, and in it the kingdom of God is entered by faith. Third is the Day of the Lord, the seven-year Tribulation of wrath and judgment that follows the Rapture. And fourth is the kingdom restored to Israel, the promised Messianic reign that begins when the King returns. Draw the line moving from Israel, through the Church Age, into the Tribulation, and on to the kingdom.
