The word sabbath is from the Hebrew shabath, meaning to repose, to desist from exertion. Every sabbath is designed as a time to cease from toil and celebrate God's abundant provision, and Scripture describes eight of them. (1) The Sabbath of God, when on the seventh day He rested—not from need but to declare His work finished and everything His people would ever need already provided (Genesis 2:1-3; Hebrews 4:4). (2) The Weekly Sabbath, a reminder to Israel that everything they had was by grace and could not be earned (Exodus 20:8-11; Deuteronomy 5:12-15). (3) The Sabbatical Year, a bigger test of resting in His perfect provision for a whole year (Exodus 23:10-11; Leviticus 25:3-4, 18-22). (4) The Canaan Rest, life in the Promised Land—a picture of spiritual maturity and the full enjoyment of divine blessing, where every battle is still won by faith-rest (Hebrews 3:7-19). (5) The Year of Jubilee, coming every fiftieth year, when all debts were forgiven, all slaves set free, and all lost land restored to its owner (Leviticus 25; 27). (6) The Moment-by-Moment Sabbath, the rest of the faith-rest life He wants us to enjoy every moment, in good times and bad, entered by believing Christ's word, It is finished (Hebrews 4:1-9). (7) The Millennium, the thousand-year reign of Christ, a sabbath of perfect environment, government, and justice that will forever silence the claim that environment is man's problem (Revelation 20). (8) Eternity, the final and everlasting sabbath rest, when the dead who die in the Lord rest from their labors (Revelation 14:13). All of them teach the same truth: we cease from our own works and rest in what God has already provided.
