What is the Bible's teaching on blessing and reward?
The Bible teaches that there are five categories of blessings in time, including spiritual blessing (Eph. 1:3; Col. 2:10), promotion (1 Sam. 2:30), blessing by association (Psalm 23:5), historical impact (Isa. 53:12), and dying grace (Psalm 116:15). In eternity, there are four categories of rewards, including praise (1 Cor. 4:5), crowns (1 Cor. 9:24–27), rank and authority (Matt. 25:14–23; Rev. 2:26), and glory (Dan. 12:3; Rom. 8:17–18; Rev. 2:28). A believer who only wants blessing is weak and immature, and those who gripe and complain in adversity do not understand God or His plan. The Bible emphasizes the importance of resting on God's power and faith in His promises to experience maximum production and blessing. We are called to live one day at a time, dealing with our weaknesses and temptations, and trusting that God's mercy is renewed every morning. As we rest in God's provision, we will experience spiritual maturity and the full enjoyment of divine blessing, where every battle is won by faith-rest.
