What is the role of illumination in understanding Scripture?
Illumination refers to the work of the Holy Spirit, who 'casts light on' the Word and makes it clear to man (John 16:13). Man, blinded by Satan, cannot understand divine truth without this illumination. The Holy Spirit's work is essential for making the written Word understandable and applicable to individual believers' needs. Whether one experiences illumination depends on their attitude when approaching the Word (John 7:17). It is crucial to be filled with the Spirit during study. Without the illuminating ministry of the Holy Spirit, one cannot understand themselves or why they act in certain ways (1 Cor. 2:9-11). The Bible promises that God will preserve His Word forever and make it clear through illumination. As Psalm 119:89 says, 'For ever, O Lord, thy word is firmly fixed in heaven.'
