What is the difference between being conformed and being transformed?

To be conformed is suschematizo, from schema, outward appearance—it means being pressed into a mold from the outside. The world constantly puts pressure on us to take on the appearance of the age in which we live, and Paul commands us to stop allowing ourselves to be shaped that way. To be transformed is metamorphoo—meta, "to change," and morphoo, "form"—a change that is inner and involves our very essence. The difference is direction: conformity works from the outside in, trying to change the inner man by reshaping the outer, while transformation begins on the inside with our thinking and attitude and then works its way out to affect what we look like on the outside.
