What does it mean to be a “living and holy sacrifice”?
To be a "living and holy sacrifice" is to present our physical bodies to God for His use. In the Old Testament every sacrifice had to be killed, but Paul says ours is to be living—the plan of God is that every believer be in full-time, twenty-four-hour-a-day Christian service. "Holy" means "set apart" or "sanctified" and refers to the filling of the Holy Spirit: when we have no unconfessed sin and are filled by means of the Spirit, we are acceptable to God. Positionally we are always righteous and sanctified, but we are practically sanctified—a usable sacrifice—only when we are walking in the Spirit.
