What five tactics does Satan use against Job in the attacks described in Job 1:13–19?
In the assault of Job 1:13-19 we see five favorite tactics of Satan. First, precision timing: he struck on the birthday of Job's firstborn, at the moment it would hurt most and touch Job's greatest fear. Second, chaos: in an instant all that Job knew and trusted was shaken and his peace was gone, for Satan is the king of confusion and turmoil. Third, violence: the servants were slain "with the edge of the sword," a fear phrase meant to fill Job with terror. Fourth, multiple blows, one after another, seen in the thrice-repeated "while he was still speaking," for he understands the shock effect of blow upon blow. And fifth, calamity dressed up to look like an act of God, as when the messenger says "the fire of God fell from heaven," though God was not its author.
