What are the seven steps of spiritual advance outlined in 2 Peter 1?

Once we choose to grow and stay motivated, 2 Peter 1 lays out seven steps of spiritual advance. First is excellence, the virtue that is the demonstration of power—knowing how to be and stay filled by means of the Holy Spirit. Second is knowledge, growing through diligent study of the Word, which only the filling of the Spirit makes possible. Third is self-control, an inner system of authority in the soul that lets us govern ourselves as servants of God. Fourth is perseverance, the stamina of the faith-rest life that abides under pressure and endures testing. Fifth is godliness, which is conformity to the Person of Christ. Sixth is brotherly kindness, the royal family love that treasures the life and growth of every other believer. Seventh is love, agape—the sacrificial love only God can produce, a passion for man's ultimate good, which is the very goal and destination of the life of faith.
