Who was justified before God? Why?
The tax collector went down to his house justified, and the Pharisee did not (Luke 18:14). Justified, from dikaioo, means declared righteous. He was justified because he humbled himself, saw how great his need was, and cried out for mercy, while the Pharisee exalted himself. Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted; only those who realize their need for mercy can lay hold of God's grace.
