What is the character of God, and how does it relate to sin?

The character of God is the holy standard by which we measure sin. Sin is essentially a restless unwillingness on the part of the creature to abide in the sphere and limitation in which the all-wise Creator placed him. It is a lack of conformity to the character of God, making it unlike Him. The Bible teaches that the only way to understand sin is to have a clear understanding of God's character, which can be known through His Word. When we study and meditate on God's Word, we come to know His character and are able to see how sinful our actions are in comparison. Sin is so terrible that it brought degeneration, depravity, and unfathomable suffering, as seen in the consequences of Adam and Eve's sin. The holy character of God is reflected in Jesus Christ, who displays God's character and reveals Him to humanity. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can be declared righteous by God, not on the basis of our own actions, but on the basis of Christ's righteousness received by faith.
