What does the Bible teach about freedom?
The Bible teaches that God gave humanity genuine freedom and a real choice in the Garden of Eden. He knew that with this freedom, danger would enter the perfect environment, but He valued authentic love and volition over forced obedience. Adam's choice to reject God plunged the whole race into spiritual death and separation from God. However, God provided a solution through Jesus Christ, who became sin for all men on the cross. Through faith in Him, we can become the righteousness of God and experience freedom from sin and its consequences. But this freedom depends on our choice to partake of it. We must exercise our freedom by choosing to look forward in faith to the coming of the promised Redeemer. Jesus Christ wants us to enjoy the freedom He died for, and He has given us the right and responsibility to choose how we will live our lives. Our individual freedom in Christ is precious in God's sight, but it can be forfeited if we do not use it wisely. We must remember that while we have freedom, we are bound in its exercise by the weakness of others, and we should restrain certain activities that may cause them to stumble.
