According to the Bible, what is mankind's basic problem?

Man's problem is sin. In the Garden, God gave man genuine freedom and a real choice, and man used that freedom to reject Him - plunging the whole race into spiritual death and separation from God. Every trouble we face traces back to that one root: we are sinners, cut off from the life of God.
