What does the Bible teach about forgiveness?
Forgiveness is a fundamental aspect of the Christian life, rooted in God's character and demonstrated through Jesus Christ. Positionally, our sins are forgiven forever at the moment of salvation (2 Cor. 5:21). However, daily we need to confess and be cleansed from sin to maintain fellowship with God (1 John 1:9; Eph. 5:18b). Forgiveness is not dependent on the other person's request or response but is a command to forgive as God has forgiven us in Christ (Eph. 4:32). The standard for forgiveness is not our own capacity but God's act of lavishing His riches of grace upon us (Eph. 1:7-8). Forgiveness and reconciliation are distinct concepts, with forgiveness being the act of releasing the other person from the debt of their sin, while reconciliation requires both parties to acknowledge and make amends for past wrongs. By forgiving others, we put God's forgiveness into practice and demonstrate our understanding of His character (Rom. 5:8). As believers, we are encouraged to ask for daily forgiveness as part of our walk with God, recognizing that this is a necessary aspect of maintaining fellowship and living in obedience to Him.
