What is the Bible's teaching on empiricism and its limitations in understanding God?
The Bible teaches that empiricism, reliance on sensory perception for discovering truth, is flawed because many things cannot be measured, seen, or accounted for. This method serves as the basis of scientific investigation but falls short in man's attempt to find or know God. In contrast, faith alone is the means by which God planned for man to discover Him (1 Cor. 1). The Apostle Paul emphasizes that God's thoughts and ways are vastly superior to human understanding (Isaiah 55:8-11), and He can be trusted because He never lies and always keeps His Word. Faith, as reliance on the inspired Word of God, is the only means by which we can please Him (Heb. 11:6). Empiricism and rationalism, while useful in discovery and education, are insufficient for understanding God's nature and character. The Bible clearly distinguishes between faith and human reasoning or sensory perception, underscoring that faith is essential for knowing God.
