What does the Bible teach about conscience?

The Bible teaches that our conscience is a storehouse for truth, and it becomes clear when we are positive and willing to confess our sins. When we reject the truth, we establish a vacuum in our soul, which inevitably leads us to accept lies and live by rationalism instead of faith. Our conscience shuts down as we think and understand become shady, and we can no longer recall doctrines we once knew and understood. The light of the Word is being extinguished from our conscience, leaving behind only darkness. We are cut off from the power of Christ and His abundant life when we exchange the truth of the Creator for the lies of the creature. A clear conscience comes from filling our mind with the Word through Bible study, rather than vanity and emptiness. Our conscience can be eaten alive by guilt, fear, and hardness if we do not walk in fellowship with God. The Bible warns that if we do not fill our conscience with truth, it will become a tyrant ruled by rationalism and emotional revolt. Our self-consciousness becomes a hell of preoccupation with ourselves when functioning apart from the Word. A clear conscience is essential for living a life of absolutes, controlled by the Spirit and running toward the goal set before us.
