What are the spiritual disciplines of the Christian life?
The Christian life is lived by faith, and faith runs on daily habit. Begin each day filled with the Holy Spirit, and keep current through the day by confessing your sins — mental, verbal, and overt (Eph. 5:18; 1 John 1:9; 1 Cor. 11:28–31). Meet the day with study and prayer (2 Tim. 2:15; 3:16–17; 2 Pet. 3:18; 1 Thess. 5:17; Phil. 4:6). Be alert to apply the faith-rest technique daily (Prov. 3:5–6; Psalm 37:4–7), be alert to open doors of service (1 Pet. 3:15; Col. 4:17), and make your family the base of operations for applying doctrine (Col. 3:17–21). Seven further disciplines produce peace, and every one of them begins the same way, because “we walk by faith not by sight” (2 Cor. 5:7): by faith, accept life unconditionally as God’s perfect plan for you (Rom. 8:28; 1 Thess. 5:18); live in conscious fellowship with God (1 John 1:7); keep short accounts with Him (1 John 1:9); seek His Word daily (Matt. 4:4; 5:6); trust the power of prayer (James 5:16; 1 Pet. 5:7); rest in His promises (2 Pet. 1:4; Heb. 6:17–20); and see eternal purpose in life’s trials (2 Cor. 4:16–18).
