What is the Bible's teaching on confession and its role in the Christian life?
Confession is a vital aspect of the Christian life, dealing with three types of sin: imputed sin, inherent sin, and personal sin. Imputed sin is dealt with by being placed in Christ at salvation, where we are seen as innocent. Inherent sin is dealt with by receiving a new nature when we believe in Jesus Christ. Personal sin is dealt with by Jesus paying for every sin ever committed, allowing us to confess and be forgiven when we break fellowship with God. The Bible teaches that confession leads to cleansing from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9) and sanctification, making us useful and prepared for the Master's use (2 Cor. 5:17). Continual confession of sin is necessary for daily cleansing and spiritual growth. As believers, we are priests unto God, making an offering to Him through our daily lives, which requires a living sacrifice of ourselves (Rom. 6:13; Eph. 5:26). By confessing our sins, we can walk boldly into the throne room of God, knowing every sin has been paid for and we have been redeemed.
