What does the Bible teach about baptisms?

The Bible teaches that there are seven different types of baptisms, consisting of four 'real' baptisms where a real change takes place and three 'ritual' baptisms where no change occurs but something is identified with its purpose. In the real baptisms, no water is involved, whereas in the ritual baptisms, water represents something spiritual. The real baptisms include the Baptism of Moses, where slaves became free men (1 Cor. 10:1–2); the Baptism of the Cross, where Jesus became sin (2 Cor. 5:21); the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, where a believer is placed in Christ and becomes a new creature (1 Cor. 12:13; Eph. 1:13); and the coming Baptism of Fire, where unbelievers are identified with the fire of judgment (Matt. 3:11; 2 Thess. 1:7–8). The ritual baptisms include the Baptism of John, which pictured identification with the kingdom (Matt. 3:11; Acts 19:3); the Baptism of Christ, which pictured the Lord's identification with the Father's will (Matt. 3:13–17); and the Baptism of Believers, which is an outward expression of an inward change and a picture of identification with Jesus Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection (Matt. 28:19–20; Acts 16:33; 1 Cor. 1:17).
