The Angel of the Lord is the preincarnate Christ, the second Person of the Trinity. Every Old Testament appearance of God was the preincarnate Christ appearing on Earth in bodily form. This bodily form is described as 'the angel of the LORD' (Gen. 16:7–13; 22:11–18; 31:11–13; 48:15–16; Exod. 3:2–14; Judg. 6:11–23; 13:2–22), 'a man' (Gen. 18:1–33; 32:24–32; Josh. 5:13–15; Dan. 3:24–25), or simply as 'the God of Israel … the LORD' (Exod. 24:9–11). Jesus Christ is the only visibly revealed member of the Trinity, and every visible appearance of God in the Old Testament was Him. The Angel of the Lord is not a created being, but the second Person of the Trinity manifesting Himself on Earth to interact with humanity. This manifestation took various forms, including 'the glory of the Lord' (Exod. 13:21–22; 14:19; 16:7, 10; 24:16–17; 33:18–23), which was the cloud and pillar of fire that led and defended the Jews throughout their wilderness wanderings.
