What is a spiritual gift and what is its purpose?

A spiritual gift is a divine enablement — the Greek is charisma, rooted in charis, grace — that the Holy Spirit gives each believer at salvation. Its purpose is ministry: willing service to Christ that edifies, or builds up, the Body of Christ. It is through the exercise of our gift that we come to know God most intimately and the world sees the evidence of God in us.
