What does James mean by “various” trials?
Various trials, from the Greek poikilos, means multicolored trials. Satan offers his temptations in colors that we like; he studies and analyzes us and brings just the things that are beautiful to our particular area of weakness in the sin nature. Peter, like James, reminds us that we will face these multicolored tests and trials in life.
