What does James say we are to consider when we are tempted?

James says we are to consider, to add up the facts, and let joy lead the way through the trial (James 1:2-4). The Greek hegeomai was originally a mathematical term meaning to weigh and compare the information at hand. The facts we weigh are these: that God is faithful to limit testing to our spiritual and physical abilities; that God works everything together for good for those who love Him; that temptation is a trial of our faith allowed with a view toward reward; and that in adversity we have the opportunity to advance more rapidly in the faith. If under testing we stop and add up what we know about who God is and why this is happening, then joy will lead the way through.
