What are the seven steps from spiritual retreat to recovery?
The road back, drawn from James 4:6-10 and pictured in the return of the prodigal son, also has seven steps. First we submit to God, taking our rightful place under His authority and turning from self-reliance to God-reliance. Second we resist the devil, standing firm against him in the power of the Spirit. Third we draw near to God through prayer and the study of His Word. Fourth we purify ourselves—confessing our sin, which is done in a moment, and correcting our lives, which takes time. Fifth we reorient to God with godly sorrow that brings repentance, our laughter turned to mourning. Sixth we are humbled—not something we do to ourselves, but what we allow God to work within us, seeing ourselves as He sees us. Seventh, He lifts us up, restoring His erring child with extravagant grace.
