What is the “rock” upon which the Church is built?

The rock is Peter’s confession — his declaration of the deity and humanity of Jesus Christ: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus says “I will build” in the future tense, showing the Church did not yet exist, and “My church,” showing it is His own possession, against which the gates of Hell will never prevail.

Also asked: What is the foundation upon which Jesus will establish His own church? · What is the declaration that Jesus will use as the basis for building His church?
Also asked, more loosely
On what statement will Jesus build and establish His church as His own possession?
