What is the biblical teaching on redemption?

Redemption is the act of Jesus Christ paying the price to buy us out of the slave market of sin, opening the gate so all who want to can go free. The first biblical picture of redemption is found when God clothed Adam and Eve with garments of skin (Gen. 3:21), demonstrating that man is helpless to bridge the spiritual separation from God caused by sin. Jesus' death on the cross was a punitive payment for all sin, a substitutionary sacrifice in our place, voluntary as He went willingly to the cross, redemptive as He bought us out of slavery to sin, and propitiatory as it satisfied God's righteous demand for a perfect sacrifice for sin. As believers, we have been redeemed and can walk boldly into the throne room of God (Heb. 4:16), with three assignments defining our purpose in life: priesthood, representing ourselves before God through confession and prayer; service to others, using our gifts and talents to bless those around us; and stewardship, managing God's resources entrusted to us. By understanding redemption, we can live face-to-face with God, knowing every sin has been paid for.
