What does the Bible teach about reconciliation?

Reconciliation is a payment, judgment, and substitution. Jesus took upon Himself the judgment for all sin (Gal. 3:13; 2 Cor. 5:21). He died in our place, wounded for our iniquities and bruised for our transgressions (Isa. 53:5–6; Lev. 1:4; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Pet. 2:24). Jesus knew the plan of the Father and went willingly to the cross (John 10:18), setting His face like flint (Isa. 50:7). Through reconciliation, we are restored to a relationship of peace with God (Rom. 5:1) and have an absolutely secure place to rest and find refreshment, even in tribulation (John 14:27; 16:33). Reconciliation is effective when anyone puts faith in the work of Jesus Christ on the cross, accomplishing their salvation (Rom. 5:9; 2 Cor. 5:21; Eph. 2:13; Heb. 9:11–12). It reveals much about God's love, compassion, mercy, and grace (John 3:16; Rom. 5:8; 1 John 4:9–10) and is the power to effect a change between estranged parties – man in rebellion on one side, the faithful God on the other, with the barrier of our sin between.
