What is the biblical definition of the world?
The world is an age (Greek aion) referring to the trends of human history. It is a place of constant pressure that attempts to mold individuals into its outward appearance and societal trends (Rom. 12:1–2).
This world is described as dead and in darkness, though it was reached by the Light of the Word (John 1:14). It is a place where the devil, Satan, works to deceive people (Rev. 12:9) and is currently under the influence of a ruler who has been judged (John 16:11).
Believers are called to overcome the world through faith (1 John 5:4–5) and to look away from its distractions to focus on the truth of the Word (Matt. 5:6). The local church serves as a base from which believers are sent out to carry truth into Satan's world.
