What is baptism? What are the two types of baptisms described in the Bible?

The Greek baptizo carries two ideas: “to change the nature of something” and “to identify something with its purpose.” Scripture describes two kinds. Real baptisms are those in which an actual change of nature takes place — and in every one of these no water is involved (for example, the baptism of the Holy Spirit). Ritual baptisms are those in which no change of nature takes place, but water pictures something spiritual (such as believer's water baptism). There are seven in all — four real and three ritual.
