What produces spiritual thirst in a believer?
The thirst Jesus speaks of is spiritual, and it is a matter of choice. He phrases His invitation as a condition—"if anyone is thirsty"—with the verbs in a form that indicates potential and personal choice, so that we decide whether or not we will be spiritually thirsty. Spiritual thirst is the soul's recognition of its own need, the craving that only Christ can satisfy; and once we choose to be thirsty, we then choose whether we will come to Him and drink. Since to drink means to believe, only moment-by-moment faith in Christ can quench the moment-by-moment thirst of the soul.
