What does the river in Jeremiah 17 illustrate? In what New Testament passage does Jesus talk about this same river?
The river in Jeremiah 17 is a picture of God the Holy Spirit. In the desert Jeremiah describes, the river is the only source of life; everything outside its banks is nonproductive, but the tree planted by it draws up the water and flourishes. Jesus speaks of this same river in John 7:37-39, when He stands on the last day of the feast and cries out that whoever believes in Him will have rivers of living water flow from his innermost being—and John tells us plainly that He spoke this of the Spirit.
