What is the Church?

The Church is the called-out body of the Lord Jesus Christ, derived from the Greek ekklesia. It is a spiritual organism rather than a physical or human organization, as every believer is baptized by the Holy Spirit into union with Christ at the moment of salvation (1 Cor. 12:13).

The Church is the possession of Jesus Christ, who is its head (Matt. 16:18; Eph. 1:22-23). It is formed and empowered for its mission by the Holy Spirit (John 7:37-39; John 14-16; Acts 1:8; 19:1-7). Throughout all eternity, the Church will serve as the display piece of God's surpassing riches of grace (Eph. 2:4-7).

The two-fold mission assigned to the Church is evangelism and edification (Matt. 28:19-20). While the Body of Christ consists of all believers, they gather into local churches—geographic assemblies of saints—which serve as the base for training, preparation for service, and the study of the Word of God (Heb. 10:25; 13:7-17; Eph. 4:11-16).
