What is the nature of humility, and how does it relate to our relationship with God?

Humility must be sought (Zeph. 2:3). It is displayed through restraint, as seen in Jesus' words, 'Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you' (Luke 6:28–29). Humility is produced by the Holy Spirit, who produces fruit such as humility in believers (Gal. 5:22–23). In teaching and learning, humility is absolutely essential, as it allows us to be teachable and receptive to God's Word. Humility is priceless in the sight of God, who opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6; 1 Pet. 5:5). It is the path to divine promotion, as seen in Peter's exhortation to 'humble yourselves under God's mighty hand' (1 Pet. 5:6). Humility is also the basis of biblical self-esteem, which recognizes our worth and value as children of God. Ultimately, humility is perfectly exemplified in the Lord Jesus Christ, who humbled Himself even to death on a cross (Isa. 53:7; Matt. 11:29; 21:5; Phil. 2:5–8).
