What does the Bible teach about discernment?

Discernment is the ability to make wise distinctions and decisions, judging between good and evil. It's a product of balancing the Word and the Spirit in our souls. Jesus Christ wants us to enjoy the freedom He died for, and we have the right and responsibility to choose how we live our lives. However, this freedom must be exercised with consideration for others, especially weak believers. The law of love is higher than the law of liberty; while we have freedom, we are bound in its exercise by the weakness of others. We restrain certain activities that are good and proper in themselves lest we become a stumbling block. Discernment involves making wise decisions, not just knowing what to do, but also having the courage to act on it, which comes from the Holy Spirit. It's trained through daily feeding on God's Word and putting it into practice until our senses are trained to distinguish good from evil.
