What does Paul mean in 2 Corinthians 4:7 when he says “we have this treasure in earthen vessels”? What are the vessels? What is the treasure?
The treasure is the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God (2 Corinthians 4:4); it is Jesus Christ Himself, the reflection of divine glory, the same Shekinah Glory that once illuminated the tabernacle in the midst of Israel. The earthen vessels are our physical bodies, as fragile as clay pots. We carry this priceless light in such fragile containers so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be seen to be of God and not from ourselves, making the true source of the power in our lives evident to the world.
